2014 Traub Scholarship Recipients

Congratulations to BHHS seniors, Abigail McKenzie and Joseph Baczkowski, for receiving the 2014 Robert C.J. Traub Memorial Scholarship.

Abigail (art) and Joseph (music) each demonstrated a special proficiency and promise of achievement in their respective areas of interest. They will enjoy a summer of travel abroad after graduation from high school before attending college.

Abigail is a Regional Scholastics Art Award recipient with a Gold Key Portfolio, Gold Key Award, and three Silver Key Awards. She has also participated in the Wayne State University Tri-County High School Exhibition and Bloomfield Hills District Art Show. Abigail was a Summer in the City volunteer for two years. She has spent countless hours after school working in the ceramics room to pursue her passion with sculpting, while taking seven semesters of ceramics and sculpture.

Abigail has been awarded a $40,000 scholarship from both the College for Creative Studies and Columbus College of Art and Design. She desires to keep making art that inspires people. Abigail would love to visit Greece to tour the great ancient sculptures and rich architectural history.

Joseph has earned 1 ratings at the MSBOA District Solo/Ensemble, MSBOA State Solo/Ensemble, and MSVMA District Solo/Ensemble. He has played the trumpet in the Jazz Band, Marching Band, Symphony Band, and Symphony Orchestra. He earned a place in the MSBOA District Honors Band. Joseph performs as the Principal Trumpet in the Oakland Youth Orchestra, and attended the Avanti! Detroit Symphony Orchestra Music Workshop, as well as the Blue Lake Fine Arts Music Camp. He was a Trumpet Soloist at Sacred Heart of the Hills, and currently an Instrumentalist and Vocalist for the Youth Choir at St. Irenaeus.

Joseph has performed with the AHS Band and Orchestra in the Edinburgh Easter Festival in Scotland, the AHS Choir in the Home for the Holidays concert series at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and with the BHHS Band and Orchestra at the Michigan Music Conference. He has also participated in several high school musical productions, and volunteered at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's Saturday Morning Children's Concerts. Joseph would love to visit Italy and explore his Italian heritage through music.
