2016 Traub Recipients

Congratulations to Hwan Jang for receiving the 2016 Robert C.J. Traub Art Memorial Scholarship! Also, kudos to our alternate winner Hadley Hrdlicka!

The Robert C.J. Traub Memorial Scholarship Travel Fund began in 1956. The purpose of the scholarship is to contribute to the general cultural enrichment of the recipients and not primarily to advancement of their technical education in art or music. Hwan demonstrated a special proficiency and promise of achievement in his respective areas of interest. He will enjoy a summer of travel abroad after graduation from high school before attending college.

"The music and art students in the Bloomfield Hills Schools system are exceptional, and are taught by a dedicated faculty. What the arts offer are extraordinary opportunities for communication. They are special languages that take training to learn but offer creative practitioners infinite opportunities to touch people across the barriers of language, religion, and culture. These times call for bridge building," expressed Ms. Lucy Bates during the Traub assembly.

We are extremely proud of these students and their accomplishments!

Hwanseong (Hwan) Jang (Art Winner):

As the Traub art winner, Hwan's passion is in transportation design. Hwan took third place in the National Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Autorama Design Competition in 2015 and 2016; won a Scholastic Art Gold Key Portfolio Award for transportation design and Honorable Mentions for digital art and painting; as well as participated in the 2016 Wayne State University Tri-County Art Show for painting. "Designing cars has been my passion ever since 7th grade...I believe I'm an artist whose special talent is designing cars for people to enjoy. For me, car design is not a casual hobby; it is my passion and it will be my dream to work in the field," expresses Hwan. He has chosen to travel to Germany to explore its rich history of automotive design. Hwan plans on attending the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan to major in this field.

Hadley Hrdlicka (Art Alternate): As the Traub alternate art winner, Hadley has won a Scholastic Art Award Silver Key and two Honorable Mentions for sculpture. She was also a School of the Art Institute of Chicago Merit Scholarship winner. "I hope that through my artwork, the world can see my purpose is to create," explains Hadley. She plans to attend her dream school, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago to major in sculpture.

About the Traub Scholarship Competition: The Traub judging panel is comprised of BHS teachers, administrators, and Ms. Lucy Bates. Ms. Bates, granddaughter of C.J. Traub and his wife, Elizabeth, established the scholarship 59 years ago to benefit Bloomfield Hills students. Ms. Bates travels from her home in California to Bloomfield each year to be involved in the art and music adjudication and awarding of the scholarships.

The initial fund was created by a gift with the Fund to continue in perpetuity. Each year, all the income realized from the trust fund is distributed equally among the winners. In 1957, the first year of Traub competition, the fund provided two scholarships of $700. Since 1999, four scholarships have been awarded, two at Lahser and two at Andover. Since 2014, Bloomfield Hills High School has awarded one scholarship to each of the winning candidates, one in art and one in music.
