2019 IB Art Show
The IB Diploma Programme seniors exhibited their artwork during the IB Art Show at Bloomfield Hills High School March 4 - 8, 2019. Zoe Gajewski, Caelan Jansen, Annaliese Khemmoro, Andres Quiroga-Elizondo, Anisha Nahta, and Jack Wander challenged their own creative and cultural expectations and boundaries to create stunning pieces.
The IB Diploma Programme visual arts course is a thought-provoking course in which students develop analytical skills in problem-solving and divergent thinking, while working towards technical proficiency and confidence as art-makers. Students are scored in three areas:
A cultural comparison of art
A process portfolio (an in depth journal)
Finished artwork culminating in an exhibition
According to IB Art teacher Barb Brownson, the students' grades depend on public participation. Brownson explains: "They all will have a guest book or something similar to get the public's reaction. They have to write a paragraph or so about whether or not they communicated their ideas to the audience and how they know."
Brownson explains there is an extensive process the students go through before the show commences. "The senior year they do a comparative study paper where they have to compare their artwork with other artists from different centuries, from different countries, and from different techniques. The comparative study is 20 percent of their grade. Then, 40 percent of their grade is their journal where they document their exercises, take pictures of their art, write about the process, and add a critique that shows what they improved. The final 40 percent is the actual art pieces themselves. They have their own Senior IB Art Exhibition with approximately 11 pieces they display with both titles and the reason why they selected the pieces for the show."
